How to avoid ‘fishing expedition’ in the Philippines
The Philippine government is sending its fishing expedition to China after its fishing fleet was stopped by Chinese officials who said it was illegal to fish in their territory.
The Philippine government said it would send fishing boats and military boats to the area in search of the missing fishing vessels and said it will use the assistance of Chinese fishermen.
A Philippine navy spokesman said it did not believe the Chinese government had made a request for permission to enter the Philippine territorial waters, a statement that came as China’s foreign ministry called on the Philippine government to stop fishing.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he ordered an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, the country’s most powerful decision-making body, after the fishing vessel was stopped.
It is not clear whether the Chinese fishing boats will be allowed to enter Philippine waters.
The Chinese embassy in Manila said it had no comment.
China has said it has never asked the Philippines to send a fishing boat to its territory and that it does not consider its fishermen illegal.
