Which new LGBT-friendly film should you be seeing this month?
We’ve got a ton of new films coming out this month, including The Promise (A$AP Rocky), My Life Will Be Different (Derek Vinyard), The Way Out (James Franco), and the highly anticipated A Different Kind of Truth (Michael Fassbender).
It’s no secret that this year is a busy one for LGBT rights, with the Equality Act, the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Hate Crime Statistics, and the 2017 US Presidential Election all going down.
But there’s a lot more to see than just these films, and there’s also a new and exciting project in development.
The Promise stars Dermot Mulroney and Olivia Wilde, and is set to open in theaters this month.
Mulritt and Wilde were previously announced to star in the film.
It’s based on a short story by Canadian writer David Farrar, who is best known for his work on the Twilight series.
The story centers on two teenagers who decide to join the Canadian Army in World War I to fight fascism.
While on duty, they discover that they are transgender.
Mulryhoney and Wilde also play two of the main characters in the short story, a lesbian who joins the Army and a gay man who joins an anti-fascist resistance group.
It looks like the project is being written by Oscar winner David Oyelowo, who directed and starred in the Oscar-nominated drama The Night Manager.
It’s been a wild year for LGBT representation in movies.
The film industry has seen the first major LGBTQ representation in a feature film (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, starring Julia Roberts and Jake Gyllenhaal) and a slew of LGBTQ films have opened, including Moonlight, Moonlighted, and Les Misérables.
But the film industry also has seen some big strides in terms of LGBT representation on screen.
In 2015, The BFG, a film that stars Ryan Gosling, Scarlett Johansson, and John Leguizamo, became the first openly gay film to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
It also became the most-nominee film at Sundance, receiving a whopping four nominations (including Best Foreign Language Film for the story of a lesbian couple).
The BPG was followed by the 2016 drama Les Miséricains, which stars a gay couple and is based on an original story.
The BFP is currently in production and will open in November 2018.
In 2018, Les Misèles’ star, Kevin Bacon, came out as transgender to the world and received widespread acclaim.
In 2017, Les Miserables star, Sophie Okonedo, was forced to make a public statement about her personal journey, and her transition.
It was also a year in which trans women of color, including Latina actress Lea Michele, began making their voices heard, as did transgender women of colour in the media.
While the mainstream Hollywood community has moved toward more acceptance of LGBTQ representation, there is still a long way to go.
The next step will be for these films to reach the mainstream audience.
